Average FIDE Rating by Country (Top 5 Players)
(in comparison with the Soviet / Russian benchmark)
1971 – 2009
Notes:
- India had one listed player in the inaugural FIDE list in 1971.
- Two players from China first appeared on the list in the mid-1970s, with names that didn’t even sound Chinese.
- Vietnam got into the fold much later on in the early 1990s.
- The Philippines on the other hand have produced quite a number of master-level players long before the rating lists were conceived.
A Much-needed Boost
Viswanathan Anand and his impact on Indian chess which started in the late 1980s, in some ways, could be comparable to Wesley So’s emerging influence in the development of Philippine chess.
If such is the case then we can envision the country to be among the top ten chess playing nations around the year 2025.
