FIDE was formally organized on the final day of the first unofficial Chess Olympiad, which was held in Paris in conjunction with the 1924 Summer Olympics.

From 1950 onwards, it became established for Chess Olympiads to be staged with a regular two-year interval.

The Philippines has been a participant of the games since 1956 except in 1962 where they did not take part. The highest team finish they have achieved was in the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad, where they landed in seventh place overall.

To date, individual board successes of Filipinos in the Olympiad come in the form of three golds, three silvers and five bronzes.
