So Near Corus C Triumph

Grandmaster Wesley So moves closer achieving his goal of winning the 2009 Corus Chess Group C plum after his eleventh round win over IM Manuel Bosboom in a Center Counter encounter. It was Bosboom who stunned second seed GM David Howell in the first round utilizing the same opening move, but the very determined fifteen-year old calmly repulsed all of the Dutchman’s advances. The thirteenth seed Bosboom,  the early pacesetter who came quite close to achieving a GM norm in the tournament, resigned just after the first time control. With the win, Wesley ended up 4-0 against his Dutch opponents.

GM Tiger Hillarp Persson relinquished his lead back to Wesley when he fell victim to IM Ali Bitalzadeh, the lowest seeded player in the tournament, after his botched Sicilian attack on white.

Collecting his third consecutive win after stumbling over a speed bump in round 8 against GM Holzke, Wesley now only needs to draw his two remaining games with Hillarp and Howell to formally claim at least a share of first place.
