Going into the final round of the 29th Edoardo Crespi Masters Trophy over in Italy, Europe-based IM Ronald Salvador (6.0/8) has a shot at the final norm he needs to get his grandmaster title. But he needs to win over Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian (7.0/8) in round 9.

IM Richard Bitoon (5.5/7) meanwhile has a relatively lighter task ahead of him, needing a point in the last two rounds of the Singapore Masters to bag the norm. He is the sole leader of the event after seven rounds and will be facing compatriot IM Sadorra in the eighth, about an hour from now. The surging Sadorra is out of luck on that elusive norm after his early setback.

Buoyed by his impressive start, untitled Kim Steven Yap is almost assured of his IM title, needing only a point in the last two rounds. But he needs to bounce back from his back to back losses. Two other untitled players, Ballecer and Mercado, may still have an outside chance for an IM norm, needing at least a win and a draw in the homestretch.

Update:

IM Bitoon drew his last two games and went on to win the 2008 Singapore Masters tournament. A double whammy for Richard as he also collected his second Grandmaster Norm in the process.

Paragua won his final round match to grab the runner up trophy.  Sadorra came in fifth after a final round draw.

Kim Steven Yap collected his third and final IM norm after drawing his last two games to become the country’s newly minted International Master.

Meanwhile, IM Ronald Salvador came up short in his GM bid after he drew his final round assignment at the Crespo Masters  event in Italy.
